Phenix was founded in 2007 by celebrity stylist Gina Rivera, whose family has been in the beauty industry since 1929. The idea was born when Gina, pregnant with her first son, received a call from her salon owner demanding booth rent while she was in the hospital—an experience that revealed the need for a better model for independent salon professionals. Named after her son, Phenix, the company was created to offer customizable, upscale suites and supportive benefits such as maternity leave, giving salon professionals the freedom to run their own businesses with lower overhead. Since beginning franchising in 2012, Phenix Salon Suites has expanded to over 425 locations across two countries.
